How To Fix Frame Drops In Games

One day when you turned on your computer and tried to play games, you found that in any game, you got a sudden FPS drops. This can be frustrating as you can't play the games smoothly. But not to worry. You can fix the problem with the solutions below.

Solutions to fix the problem

Solution 1: Disable Game DVR
Solution 2: Change the power plan
Solution 3: Update graphics card drivers
Solution 4: Close unnecessary services and apps for game boost
Solution 5: Install Windows Update

Solution 1: Disable Game DVR

The Game DVR feature is a part of Xbox One, and is also a built-in feature on Windows 10. If it's enabled on Windows 10, it can automatically record game videos in the background. It allows you to record games efficiently if you always need to record gameplay and share it with your friends.

However, it takes system resources and may cause FPS to drop in games. To fix the FPS drops issue, the first thing you can do is to disable Game DVR.

Usually, you can disable Game DVR on Windows 10 via the Settings application easily. Here's how to do it.

1) On your keyboard, press Win+R (the Windows logo key and the R key) at the same time to open the Settings window.

2) Click on Gaming.

3) In the left pane, select Game DVR. Then in the right pane, ensure the "Record in the background while I'm playing a game" option is set to "Off".

Tip: Once this option is off, Windows won't automatically record videos in the background. But you'll still be able to record game video manually from the Game Bar.

4) Restart your computer and check to see if the FPS drop issue is resolved.

In some cases, the above steps may not work. If that's your case, you can try disabling Game DVR by modifying the registry.

Note: Follow the steps below carefully as modifying registry incorrectly can cause serious system issues. Before you modify the registry, it's recommended you back up the registry first, so you can restore it in case any issue occurs.

If you know what you're doing, just try the following two methods:

Method 1:

1) Open Run box.

2) Type "Regedit" into the Run box and click OK to open Registry Editor.

3) Navigate to the following:

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\System\GameConfigStore

4) Double-click on GameDVR_Enabled and change the DWORD value from 1 to 0. If you'd like to turn it on back later, you can change the value back to 1.

5) Restart your computer and check to see if the FPS is increased. If the problem persists, continue to try Method 2.

Method 2:

1) Open Registry Editor again.

2) Navigate to the following:

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\PolicyManager\default\ApplicationManagement\AllowGameDVR

3) Double-click on value and change it from 1 to 0.

4) Restart your computer and check to see if the problem persists.

Solution 2: Change the power plan

Low FPS can be caused by poor PC performance. To fix the problem, you can change the power plan settings in Windows to make it adjust for best performance. To do so:

1) On your keyboard, press Win+R (The Windows logo key and the R key) at the same time to invoke the Run box.

2) Type "control panel" into the Run box and click OK to open the Control Panel window.

3) View by Large icons and click on System.

4) Click on Advanced system settings.

5) In the Advanced tab, click on Settings.

6) Select Adjust for best performance.

7) Click Apply -> OK to save the changes.

8) Restart your computer and check to see if the FPS increases in all games.

Solution 3: Update graphics card drivers

To have the best performance in games, it's recommended you keep the graphics card drivers up-to-date. Newer graphics card drivers may fix some bugs, make the graphics card work better in the system and boost game performance.

On the other hand, outdated or faulty graphic card drivers can be the reason for low gaming performance and low FPS.

So to fix the FPS drops in all games issue, you can try updating the graphics card driver to
the latest version. You can update the driver manually or automatically.

To manually update the graphics card driver, you can go to your PC manufacturer's website and download the latest version of driver and install it on your computer.

Manually updating drivers takes time and requires a bit of technical knowledge. If you don't have time and skills to do it manually, you can use Driver Booster to update the driver automatically with a few clicks (for more information about Driver Booster, see Driver Booster Review).

1) Download and install Driver Booster on your computer.

2) Launch it and click SCAN to allow it to detect any problem drivers on your computer.

3) Click the Update button next to the graphics card driver to download and install the driver.

4) Once the installation completes, restart your computer and check to see if the FPS drops issue is resolved.

Solution 4: Close unnecessary services and apps for game boost

Running services and apps take system resources. If you have unnecessary services and apps running while you're playing games, you can try closing them to resolve the FPS drops issue.

If you have no idea how to do it efficiently, you can use the Game Boost feature in Driver Booster, which can detect all unnecessary services and apps in the system and close them automatically. Some game players said they increased the FPS in their games with this feature.

Solution 5: Install Windows Update

The last method you can try is to install the latest Windows Update on your computer, which may improve gaming performance. To do so:

1) Open the Settings window.

2) Click on Update & Security.

3) Click on Windows Update then Check for updates. The update process may take some time. Just wait until the updates are installed on your computer.

4) Once done, restart your computer and check to see if the problem is resolved.
